Receipt voucher for an advance, and refund voucher
An advance for services carries GST on the day you receive it, and the law asks for a receipt voucher. If the deal is cancelled and you return the advance, you issue a refund voucher.
Step by step
- Type: Advance received. Fill payer, amount and mode.
- GST inside the advance (services). Tick GST is included in this advance (services), then GST %, Place of supply and SAC code. The voucher shows CGST + SGST or IGST inside the amount and prints as RECEIPT VOUCHER.
- Refund. If you return the advance: Type: Refund of an advance, with the Receipt voucher number and Receipt voucher date of the advance.
Worked example
An event planner receives ₹59,000 advance for a wedding (18%, same state). Receipt voucher: taxable ₹50,000, CGST ₹4,500, SGST ₹4,500. The GST is paid in that month's GSTR-3B. If the wedding is cancelled and ₹59,000 is returned, a refund voucher quotes the receipt voucher number and the GST can be adjusted.
Rules and dates
Section 31(3)(d) (receipt voucher) and 31(3)(e) (refund voucher) of the CGST Act, Rules 50 and 51. No GST is payable on advances for goods (Notification 66/2017-CT).
Common mistakes and how to fix them
